This coach was built in North Eastern Railway’s York works in 1903 and was liveried in deep crimson with the running number 305. The luxurious interior includes fine examples of cabinetry and heavy, free-standing furniture typical of its period.

Used as a clerestory (having a raised, windowed section of roof running down the centre of the carriage) observation saloon car, the carriage has a 4ft 8 1/2 inch gauge and wheel arrangement of 4-w bogies. During its lifetime it has carried several different numbers (LNER 2305, DE902177 and 99051) and had quite a few owners.

It was originally restored by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL York) in 1973 where it was returned to its original NER livery, and spent some time at the Ribble Steam Railway before joining the collection. NER 305 is a unique and excellent example of its type.
