Travelling in style – an age of elegance

One of the first exhibits to arrive at The One:One Collection’s new home in Margate, Kent, arriving in March 2019, NER 305 offers a stunning glimpse into first-class travel during the golden age of steam.

The coach was built in 1903, and stepping inside transports you straight to the elegant Edwardian age – into an interior filled with plush armchairs, ornate marquetry and elaborate gas lamps – more like an upmarket hotel lounge than a train carriage!

Watch ‘Bittern’ arrive in her Margate home

It’s not often you see a 102-tonne steam locomotive and her 30-tonne tender trundling along the road on the back of a lorry! But that’s exactly what happened in June 2018, when ‘Bittern’ (or to give her her full designation: LNER Class A4 4464) arrived at her new home on the Hornby site in Margate, Kent. Her certification expired in 2015, so road really was the only way to travel.
